Our Program:

Research Opportunities

BWH Department of Anesthesiology is renowned for its cutting-edge clinical, translational, and basic science research. Our researchers actively collaborate with investigators from HMS-affiliated hospitals and other academic institutions in the city, as well as our colleagues in the industry, paving the way for developing new drugs and innovative procedures.

As a BWH Anesthesiology resident, you can work with research mentors from our department and others within BWH, HMS, and MIT.  Many residents take full advantage of the many research opportunities and engage in research electives as PGY-1s and CA-3s (for up to six months of dedicated research time) or as categorical research residents, allowing for an additional 18 months of research.

Some research facts:

  • 98 research staff students
  • 31 grants awarded in the last annual cycle
  • $15.5m annual research budget
  • 227 active clinical research protocols, departmentally supported studies, and projects
