Program Tracks

Our department’s world-renowned clinicians and researchers are committed to the highest standards of medical care, scientific pursuits, and resident training. We foster an inclusive, collegial, and supportive environment, where trainees will attain broad and deep medical knowledge, develop outstanding clinical skills, contribute to patient care improvement projects, and gain a comprehensive understanding of systems-based practice while honing effective communication skills.

Categorical Track

(NRMP NUMBER 1265040CO)

This track includes a medicine-based PGY-1 year co-run with the BWH Department of Medicine (DOM). PGY-1s meet regularly with the Anesthesiology Program Directors, Chief Residents, attend DOM and Anesthesiology-run Didactics Sessions, and are assigned an Anesthesiology Big Sib. PGY-1s are invited to all Anesthesia Department social events, fostering strong connections with the department from the early days of their internship.

Current Internship Rotation Schedule*

  • The internship year is divided into 2-week blocks (a total of 26 blocks)
  • Medicine blocks: 13 blocks at BWH, 1 block at the BWFH
  • Rotations are mostly MICU/CCU (total 4 blocks), General Medicine Service (GMS), Cardiology; less often in the intensive teaching unit (ITU), bone marrow transplant, oncology

Advanced Track

(NRMP NUMBER 1265040A0)

This is a 3-year track starting in PGY-2/CA-1 year, allowing trainees to complete their internship elsewhere.

Categorical Research Track

(NRMP NUMBER 1265040C1)

For those wanting to dedicate additional time during their residency training to research, we offer a 5-year program consisting of a 1-year categorical internship and a 4-year anesthesiology residency incorporating up to 1.5 years of dedicated research time.

The research track aims to develop highly skilled physician-scientists and leading researchers. We are committed to providing a robust mentorship and training experience in research methodology that will integrate seamlessly into clinical training. We offer the flexibility of tailoring the most optimal schedule for any trainee, whether in basic, translational, or clinical research.

Bi-annual meetings offer opportunities to discuss progress and career trajectory, including presentations, publications, and future funding plans. 12-18 months are protected for dedicated research time, depending on overall career goals, type of research, and mastery of clinical skills. Multiple opportunities exist for additional research training at HMS (Harvard Medical School), BWH, and HSPH (Harvard School of Public Health). Trainees also have access to departmental resources (statisticians, graphic designers, research assistants, IT support, wet and dry-lab space, high-performance computer clusters).

For this track, the primary mentor(s) do not need to be from our department, but at least one member of the mentorship committee must be from the BWH Department of Anesthesiology.

"Physician-only,” 3-year Track

(NRMP NUMBER 1265040R0)

For applicants who have completed an intern year at an ACGME-accredited institution and are ready to start next summer as PGY-2/CA-1 residents.

Combined Pediatric/Anesthesiology Track

(NRMP NUMBER 1259726C0)

The Boston Combined Residency Program (BCRP) in Pediatrics and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Anesthesiology Residency program have created the first Combined Pediatrics – Anesthesiology Residency Program to be approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pediatrics. Graduates are fully qualified to obtain board certification in both Pediatrics and Anesthesiology.

The training environment ensures optimal exposure to the breadth of the specialty fields, with a superb training environment in these three teaching hospitals.

Sascha Beutler, MD, Ph.D., of the BWH Anesthesiology Residency Program, and Theodore C. Sectish, MD, of the Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics collaborate to ensure that the pediatrics-anesthesiology residents’ experience is coherent and educationally rich.

Samuel Lux, MD (lux@enders.tch.harvard.edu) directs the intern selections process for the BCRP pediatric program and works closely with Morana Lasic, MD (mlasic@bwh.harvard.edu), who leads the anesthesiology program selection team, to coordinate interviews at both programs.

We look forward to receiving your application to the Combined Pediatrics – Anesthesiology Residency Program.
